Nafasi means “opportunity” in Swahili, and we are dedicated to providing opportunities to hard-working students and entrepreneurs in Tanzania (East Africa). We strive to extend educational services to Tanzanians who are excluded from formal educational or financial networks, enabling them to access a global network of opportunity.
We are always in need of more volunteer English teachers, scholarship sponsors, and supplies. If you or your organization are interested in becoming involved, e-mail us today!
English Class
Nafasi’s central initiative, the Mwenge English Class, provides free English lessons to woodcarvers in Mwenge, a community in Tanzania’s capital city, Dar es Salaam. Mwenge is a popular destination for tourists, and it is important for shopkeepers and woodcarvers to be able to conduct business in English.
Educational Scholarships
Our newest initiative is the Nafasi Scholars program. Launched in 2012 at the request of the English students, this program provides sponsorships for Mwenge artisans to return to school and finish their education.
Microfinance
Nafasi was originally formed to provide small loans to entrepreneurs in the Mwenge community. Through microfinance, individuals can receive a loan even though they may not qualify for a traditional bank loan.
